Alice Cutler and Freddy
Undoubtedly, you will recognize Alice Cutler from her Live Laugh Pup comedy showcases at The Rustic Theatre, with her next scheduled appearance as part of The Rustic Theatre's Love Wins event on Saturday, June 27 at 7:00. She is also renowned through shows that she headlines in Los Angeles. But Cutler is also known around town as "Freddy’s Mom. "
And Freddy is more than your typical canine; he joins his human on stage during the aforementioned comedy performances, acting as a co-host.
So, we wanted to pick both of their brains about the inner workings of the comedy world. Surprisingly, Freddy’s answers had nothing to do with treats.

Creative Vocation: Standup comedian, actor, writer
-How did you become interested in becoming a creative person?
Alice: I've never known my life any other way. I started acting when I was 8 and haven't stopped creating one way or another since. I acted my whole childhood and through college. I started writing short films and web series, then eventually found my way to standup and storytelling.
Freddy: My mom brought me to an open mic in a park a few years ago, and I loved the spotlight. I didn't know what was going on, but I loved the attention. Now she puts me onstage at the Rustic Theatre, and I love being onstage. I mostly just sit there and think about squirrels, but the audience laughs so I must be doing something right.
-How would you describe your work?
Alice: As a standup, my material is intellectual and personal. Think storytelling punctuated with jokes.
As an actor/writer, I mix comedy and drama. I recently wrote and performed in a solo show called Inconceivable, based on my experience with infertility and pregnancy. It's equal parts funny and heartbreaking.
I like to walk that fine line between making the audience laugh and cry. I feel like there is so much healing through laughter. I'm excited to be doing Inconceivable at the Hollywood Fringe in June!
Freddy: I describe my work as minimalist. I do the bare minimum and audiences love me.
-Who, or even what, would you say is your main influence in an artistic sense?
Alice: Hannah Gatsby and Marc Maron have been inspirations for my standup because they bring personal trauma into their standup with so much humor. When I was younger and developing my craft as a comedic actor, I was inspired by Lisa Kudrow and Lucille Ball. Funny ladies have always been an inspiration to me.
Freddy: Scooby-Doo. He's not afraid to admit when he's scared or hungry. I feel represented by him.
-What inspires you and brings you the most satisfaction in doing your creative endeavors?
Alice: Making people laugh. There is no greater feeling than getting onstage, telling a joke, and hearing that laughter. Live entertainment is about having that relationship with the audience.
We miss so much of that now that we're constantly on our computers. That human connection is what keeps me going.
I've had to perform at one of my lowest moments, and getting onstage and hearing that laughter was so healing.
Freddy: Attention. I love humans and really love pets and holding hands with humans. I get to do a lot of that when I perform.
