Emily Burton

Idyllwild, Ca.

-How did you become interested in becoming a creative person?

I always loved rock and pop music from as far back as I can remember. I used to sing “Take it to the Lemon” by the Eagles whenever it came on the radio…one day I did figure out it was “Limit.”

And I was for sure the arts & crafts Girl Scout. When I was 14 I heard Black Sabbath at a party and decided playing guitar in a band was what I wanted to do with my life.

After a misguided collegiate journey into the wrong major, I transferred to DAAP – the art and design school at the University of Cincinnati – and majored in Fashion Design to focus on jewelry. It was here that I discovered another awesome way to have a career in art  – graphic design.

After school, I moved to LA with my band Fireball Ministry to become proper rock stars and I began working in the Film & TV industry doing graphic design when we weren’t touring.

-How would you describe your work?

I describe it as juggle because I’ve got music, graphic design and my jewelry business – Dutch Hollow General – all going at once.

They are all interconnected through the music that I play which is mostly hard rock & metal. The jewelry I create is primarily sterling silver with a darker alternative aesthetic and I take special considerations when designing pieces for stage.

I use my graphic design skills to make art for my bands, and working in the Entertainment Industry in film & TV advertising isn’t much of a departure from the Music Industry.

-What inspires you and brings you the most satisfaction in doing your creative endeavors?

I’m one of those people who wants to do ALL the things, so I’ve had to learn to focus and prioritize my time on each specific craft as deadlines loom.

There are definitely times where I can see a trainwreck on the tracks ahead but it’s super satisfying when it all comes together. I love seeing people wear my jewelry.  I’ve been doing more band art recently with tour posters and a new live album for Black Sabbitch, my all lady Black Sabbath band.

Ultimately my priority has always been music and I love touring – getting to travel the world and play music with my friends is the best. If you’re in Idyllwild, you can see my band Stereo Purrs playing around town, and I have a selection of my jewelry at Wildland.
